Looking for a place to study?

New Study Space in the Library!

Are you looking for a place to get some studying done?  Do you want to meet with a group to work on a project?  The Murray-Green Auditorium Library has a new study area! 

There are tables for group work and the dry erase board can help you work out the details of all your presentations.  The new study space is located on the Wabash side of the of the library, past the books.

Studying in the City!

You may have seen the great view of Lake Michigan and Buckingham Fountain from the Reading Room, but our new study space also has an excellent view of Downtown Chicago. 

Individual Study Space!

The new space also has study carrels set up so you can work on your own assignments. This is the perfect space to get a little reading done in between classes!

New eBooks from APA

Through the library, you now have access to a number of electronic books from APA.  The 2010 collection includes the new APA Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology,  Chaos and Its Influence on Children's Development and over 40 other titles. 

 

From the Library homepage, select: ONLINE RESOURCES A-Z, then select  APA PsycNET.

Click on 2010 to access the titles we have access to; the titles are listed alphabetically.  If you are accessing these ebooks from off campus, you will need to enter your Roosevelt University ID number to verify your current student standings.

Getting to know RU Students!

Now that we are a few weeks in to the semester, we want to make sure you remember that the library is here to help you with your research.  And the view on the 10th floor of the AUD building can offer you a quiet place to study, or just take a break and relax.  Our Orientation Leaders still have some tips on life in Chicago and great advice on how to spend your time at Roosevelt University.  Let's see what Roosevelt is reading...

What are you studying here at RU?

My major is Biology/Pre-Medicine with a minor in Chemistry.

Are you reading anything right now?

I am currently reading the Pretty LIttle Liars series.

What is your favorite thing about the RU Library?

My favorite things about the library are the great view of Michigan Ave and the great resources available.

What is your favorite thing to do in Chicago when you're not studying, in classes, or at work?

My favorite things to do when I have free time are shopping, cooking/baking and crafts.

Do you have any advice for students who have just joined the Roosevelt community?

My advice is to get involved on campus and make sure to take advantage of the multitude of helpful and free, resources at Roosevelt

Want to go mobile?

Laptops at the library!

Did you know you can check out a laptop from the library?  It is perfect for those times when the computer labs are crowded, or you are just looking for a quiet place to write or do your research.

Here are the details.

What:  PC laptop with Windows 7.

Where:  The Circulation Desk.

How:  With two forms of ID (your Roosevelt ID card plus another photo ID, like your drivers license or state ID card).

When:  When you need it!  The laptops can be checked out for up to FOUR hours.

FYI:  The laptops are not set up for printing, but are perfect for research and paper writing from your favorite study spot.

Meet Emily Wilkie:

What are you studying here at RU?

Sociology with a Women and Gender studies minor.

Are you reading anything right now?

"Pledged" (a book about sorority life), "Handmaid's Tale" (Emily says this is an amazing book!) and "Feminism is for Everybody" by Bell Hooks.

What is your favorite thing about the RU Library?

The best part about the library is the availability for a one on one consultation to help out with research. I have never had to do a research paper and this semester I do. It makes me feel much more confident knowing the library is there to help out.

What is your favorite thing to do in Chicago when you're not studying, in classes, or at work?

I love to go and try different restaurants and I also love to just explore the places that I haven’t been in the city. I really appreciate my time outside of the loop.

Do you have any advice for students who have just joined the Roosevelt community?

Do not get stuck in your room! Get out into the community and get involved with the school because there are so many opportunities that you can miss if you don’t force yourself to get up and DO something. College is the only opportunity for a lot of things so take advantage of every moment.

September Library Display

September Library Display:  Shel Silverstein

The Library’s newest display features the cartoons of Shel Silverstein. Silverstein was briefly a student at Roosevelt University during the 1950s, and the display shows the cartoons he drew for The Torch.

Silverstein is  an author, songwriter and cartoonist, who wrote Uncle Shelby’s ABZ Book, Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, The Giving Tree, and the songs A Boy Named Sue, and The Cover of the Rolling Stone.

Can I get my text books from the library?

The library does not purchase textbooks, because they are expensive and go out of date quickly. Occasionally you can find older copies of textbooks by searching our catalog, and in the case of novels, classic texts like the Dialogues of Plato, or works of nonfiction such as Fast Food Nation, you can often find that the library owns a copy.

If you find that the library does not own a book you need for a class, you may try searching the I-Share catalog. There is no charge to request books from I-Share, and you can often keep them for up to three months.

The library will cancel any request for a textbook or required course reading that is submitted with an ILLiad account from the WorldCat catalog. There are a number of reasons why we do this; you can read our entire textbooks and required course materials policy here.

Welcome New Students!

 

We hope you are ready for a really exciting semester.  Do you remember your visit to the library during orientation?  Were you unable to make it to orientation this year?  Not to worry, here are some of our Orientation Leaders to offer some tips on life in Chicago and give some great advice on how you spend your time at Roosevelt University.  Who knows, you might also end up with a great book recommendation!

What is your favorite thing about the RU Library?

The view of Grant Park, Buckingham, and the lake- creating an ability for me to study in a beautiful, serene, historical place!  Also, the microfilm machine is AMAZING!

What is your favorite thing to do in Chicago when you're not studying, in classes, or at work?

Exploring new neighborhoods/areas!

Do you have any advice for students who have just joined the Roosevelt community?

Find something that you’re interested/passionate about and get involved on campus: student orgs, leadership programs, volunteer programs, working for an office…anything!

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities

Faculty: Browse Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities

RU faculty interested in learning about the submission criteria for quality journals in their scholarly discipline may search in the electronic Cabell’s Directories of Publishing Opportunities database.  These directories feature the following academic categories:  Accounting, Economics & Finance, Management, Marketing, Educational Curriculum & Methods, Educational Psychology & Administration, Educational Technology & Library Science, and Psychology & Psychiatry.

 

To search, just go to the library homepage, and click the ‘Faculty Resources’ link under ‘Library Services’.  Click on the ‘Publishing’ tab, then click on the ‘Cabell’s Publishing Directories’ link.  This will bring you to the webpage for the RU Library’s Cabell’s subscription.  You will see links for the various different Directories.  Select one, using its corresponding radio button, and click the ‘Access, Selected Directory’ button.

You will now see a Directory Search page, where you can choose a specific topic using a drop-down menu.  Scroll through the list until you’ve identified the name of the journal that you’d like to see more information about, and click on “Review” to the left of the title.  A 3- to 4- page PDF document will be displayed.  Information provided is pretty straightforward – a first page shows a table summarizing the journal’s submission process, followed by a set of manuscript guidelines regarding audience, style, article preparation, etc.As a case in point, use the ‘Education Curriculum & Methods’ directory.  Choose the ‘Specific Topic’ of “Foreign Language”.  Now click on ‘Review’ for the “Journal of Second Language Writing”.  Scrolling down, we see a 10% acceptance rate, a 26-30 page manuscript length, and a ‘Submission of Articles’ section.
