GUATEMALA FILM SERIES
A series of four films will be shown beginning this week:
Devils Don't Dream!
A Flim by Adreas Hoessli
The story of the 1954 U.S. backed military coup against democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz that led to four decades of civil war.
When the Mountains Tremble
Civil war in Guatemala; the story of Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú. Describes the struggle of the largely Indian peasantry against a heritage of state and foreign oppression.
GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR
Part political thriller, part memoir, GRANITO shadows a haunting crime across four decades. Each of the five main characters whose destinies collide in GRANITO are connected by the Guatemala of 1982, then engulfed in a war where a genocidal "scorched earth" campaign by the military exterminate nearly 200,000 Maya people.
Somos Una América: Shut Down the SOA!
This film provides background on the School of the Americas and the campaign to shut it down, and then Somos Una América moves further: the film puts a spotlight on U.S. militarization and features the voices of a rising hemisphere-wide anti-militarization movement.
