Now that February has arrived, Valentine's Day is on the horizon. Love and romance are very common themes seen throughout the performing arts. In honor of Valentine's Day, the performing arts library has created a display about love and romance in music and theater. Feel free to check out the display, which includes some of the items below:
Romantic American art songs: 50 songs by 14 composers, for high voice and piano / compiled by Richard Walters. Includes art songs from composers such as Ernest Baker and John Alden Carpenter.
Broadway in love. Contains love songs of Broadway shows, such as "It Only Takes a Moment" from Hello Dolly!, "Something Good" from The Sound of Music, and "She Wasn't You" from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.
Shakespeare on Love & Lust, by Maurice Charney. Many of Shakespeare's plays deal with the topics of love and lust. This book discusses topics such as how characters fall in love, the concept of love in the tragic plays, and enemies.
Rub of Love: (a celebration of love): a short madrigal in 12 parts, by Augusta Read Thomas. Based on an anonymous Greek text entitled "The Rub of Love."
The Sonnets of William Shakespeare. Sonnet 18--"Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?"--is one of Shakespeare's most famous sonnets about the hope that love will live on.
My funny valentine. Musician Chet Baker performs pieces such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" in this recording.
