The performing arts library fish naming contest took place right before winter break, so in case you missed it, the results are in--welcome Ludwig van Betta-Fin! If you've been in the PAL lately, you may have noticed that he's not always in his usual spot on the display table. Don't worry, he's not dead--he's just been living out the cold winter in the PAL offices, where it's warmer.
In honor of Ludwig, PAL student worker Danielle Nelson created a display of fish-themed materials. Feel free to check out her display, which includes some of the items below:
Ballads and Sea Songs from Nova Scotia, collected by W. Roy Mackenzie. Includes ballads such as "As We Were a Sailing" and folk songs such as "A Frog He Would a Wooing Go." This item not on display.
The carnival of the animals: grand zoological fantasy for eleven players, by Camille Saint-Saens. This score contains pieces named for different kinds of animals, including "Aquarium--Personnages à longues oreilles."
Fish in the Unruffled Lakes: Six Settings of W.H. Auden for High Voice and Piano , by Benjamin Britten. Includes pieces such as "Night covers up the rigid land" and "Underneath the abject willow."
Fisherman's Song: for Violin and Piano , by Chen Yi.
Jungle Shoes, produced and arranged by Bernie Krause. The piece "Fish Wrap" includes sounds from real marine mammals and fish.
La Mer = The sea: three symphonic sketches, by Claude Debussy.
The music of the waters, by Laura Alexandrine Smith. A collection of songs from boatmen, fishermen, and sailors. This item not on display.
Symphony no. 6: "The Oceanic" (1995), by Stephen W. Beatty. Includes pieces such as "The Sea Cradle" and "Apocalypse and the Immortal Map."
Unless otherwise noted, all items are located on the display table in the performing arts library on the 11th floor. Items not on display can be found on the shelves.
